Albrecht der Bar (English spelling)

...Margrave Gero (?-965) conquered the area east of the Elbe River around 940 and established the bishopric of Brandenburg as a base for Christianization, but the Wends then repeatedly rebelled, and in 983 the Germans were forced to retreat to the Elbe line. In 1134, Albrecht der Bär (?-1170) of the Askanier family was appointed Margrave of the Altmark (West of the Elbe), and by 1157 he had subjugated the Slavs east of the Elbe River again, and he actively attracted immigrants from northwestern Germany, built villages and towns there, and called himself Margrave of Brandenburg. Under the Ascanian margraves who succeeded Albert, Brandenburg's territory was expanded further eastward, reaching as far as the Neumark on the other side of the Oder River in the second half of the 13th century, and at the same time German colonization was promoted.
