In 1134, Albrecht der Bär (?-1170) of the Askanier family was appointed Margrave of the Altmark (West of the Elbe), and by 1157 he had subjugated the Slavs east of the Elbe River again, and he actively attracted immigrants from northwestern Germany, built villages and towns there, and called himself Margrave of Brandenburg.
