A port city at the tip of the Yeosu Peninsula, on the southeastern edge of Jeollanam-do, South Korea. Dolsan Island and Geumeo Island to the south and Namhae Island to the east form a natural breakwater for an excellent port. With the opening of the Gwangju Line in 1922 and the Jeolla Line in 1936, it prospered as a trading port with Japan, along with Mokpo. After liberation, it became an open port. 18km west of the city is the Yeocheon Industrial Complex, which mainly produces petrochemicals. Crude oil tankers from the Middle East are docked at the port. It is also a center of coastal fishing. It is the starting point of Hallyeo-Haesang National Park.
