Born: September 10, 1960. Grayshott. British actor. Full name: Colin Andrew Firth. Entered the London Drama Centre in 1980. Debuted in the stage production of Another Country in 1983. Appeared in a different role in the film adaptation of the same work in 1984. After that, he steadily gained experience, and in 1988, he received high praise for his role in the TV drama Tumbledown. His breakthrough role was the TV drama Pride and Prejudice (1995), based on a Jane Austen novel. He also appeared in The English Patient (1996) and Shakespeare in Love (1998), both of which won the Academy Award for Best Picture. In 2001, he gave a great performance in the comedy Bridget Jones's Diary. He has also demonstrated his artistic range through a variety of productions, including Girl with a Pearl Earring (2003), in which he played the 17th century painter Jan Vermeer, the family film Nanny McPhee (2005), and the musical film Mamma Mia! (2008). In The King's Speech (2010), he gave a moving performance as King George VI, a man who had overcome his stuttering, and won numerous awards, including the Academy Award, the BAFTA, and others, for his performance as King George VI.

[Died]22 February 2002, London. British social anthropologist born in New Zealand. After teaching at the University of Sydney, he became a professor at the University of London (1944-68). He conducted research in Tikopia in the Solomon Islands (1928-29), West Africa, Malaysia, and New Guinea, and is known for his research on the indigenous peoples of Oceania, particularly the Maori. Influenced by BK Malinowski, he attempted to analyze economy, religion, and value systems from a functionalist perspective. He was knighted in 1973. His major works include We, the Tikopia (1936), Elements of Social Organization (1951), and Symbols-Public and Private (1973).

Particularly known for his semantic-centered linguistic theory and his phonological theory known as prosodic analysis. He was friends with anthropologist B. Malinowski, and developed his theory of "context of situation" into an important tool for linguistic analysis. His main works include Speech (1930) and Papers in Linguistics 1934-1951 (57). [Died] October 16, 1904, London. British painter. Entered the Slade School in 1884, and the following year won a scholarship to study at the Académie Julian in Paris. Exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1888, and thereafter regularly exhibited at New English Art Club exhibitions. Became an associate member of the Royal Academy in 1904, but died at a young age. His style was romantic, and his major works include "Diana on the Heights" and "The Return from the Horseback Riding."
