...Its origins lie in the school built in front of the Kenshunmon Gate of the Kyoto Imperial Palace in 1847 (Koka 4) at the initiative of Emperor Ninko as an educational institution for the children of nobles. In 1849 (Kaei 2), it received the imperial seal of Gakushuin from Emperor Komei and became Kyoto Gakushuin.
