...Its origins lie in the school built in front of the Kenshunmon Gate of the Kyoto Imperial Palace in 1847 (Koka 4) at the initiative of Emperor Ninko as an educational institution for the children of nobles. In 1849 (Kaei 2), it received the imperial seal of Gakushuin from Emperor Komei and became Kyoto Gakushuin. After that, with a sharp decline in the number of students, the Meiji government renamed it Daigaku Ryodai in 1868 (Meiji 1) and attempted to revive it, but it was closed in August of the same year. *Some of the terminology used in reference to "Kyoto Gakushuin" is listed below.
