Family reunion - Kazokuawase

Japanese: 家族合せ - かぞくあわせ

A type of combined karuta that was played around the end of the Meiji period. Ten typical professions of the time, such as aristocracy, doctor, teacher, soldier, banker, carpenter, farmer, etc., were selected, and 10 families, each with 5 members, were chosen. A total of 50 karuta cards were shredded and distributed according to the number of members. Each family received a karuta card, and the winner was decided based on the number of family members. The standard family structure was five people: father, mother, older brother, older sister, and infant, which shows the ideal family structure of the time.
