Founded by Sato Yoshiaki in 1904, Shincho is a long-established literary publisher. It contributed to nurturing new writers and introducing foreign literature, mainly through the magazine Shincho, which was launched in the same year. From the Taisho to the early Showa eras, it published magazines such as Bunsho Club and Bungaku Jidai, as well as the 100-yen edition of World Literature Collection and the Japanese Literature Dictionary. Shincho Bunko, which was launched in 1914, has grown to become one of Japan's leading paperback libraries, along with Iwanami Bunko. After World War II, it launched Geijutsu Shincho in 1950, ushered in the boom of weekly magazines with Weekly Shincho in 1956, and launched Focus in 1981, pioneering a new style of weekly photo magazine (it ceased publication in 2001). In the book field, it has also been active in a variety of areas, mainly literary books, such as Shincho Sensho and Shincho Shinsho. In recent years, it has also been focusing on cassette books, videos, and CD-ROMs in addition to printed matter.
