Bibliothèque Sainte-Geneviève (English name)

…In opposition to the neoclassical style of his surroundings, he was strongly attracted to the ancient Greek ruins scattered across southern Italy, and created a new trend called Neo-Greco. In his youth, he did not get along with the Academy of Fine Arts, which was dominated by elders, and he received few commissions, but later he designed the Bibliothèque Sainte-Geneviève (1850) and the Bibliothèque Nationale (1875) in Paris. While the exteriors of both were simply constructed, he boldly used cast iron and steel frames inside, creating bright, light spaces. …
