In 19th century America, experts toured the country giving lectures. In America, where people are scattered across a vast land area, culture made its own way to the countryside, rather than remaining in big cities and waiting for people to enjoy it. Until the end of the 19th century, mass communication had not yet developed, and lectures that could be understood by those who could not read were an important medium for transmitting culture. In 1826, a cultural organization called the lyceum was founded in New England, and within a few years it had spread to cities and towns across the country.
