American director and acting teacher. Born in Poland, he moved to the United States at the age of seven. In 1931, he participated in the founding of the Group Theatre and became a director, and in 1949, he was invited to become the artistic director of the Actors Studio in New York City, which was founded by Elia Kazan and others. He developed the talents of actors through a training method that focused on the inner psychology, called the "Method," which was an improvement on the Stanislavski system, and trained many great actors, including Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, and Dustin Hoffman, and became famous as a genius American acting instructor.
