...a phenomenon in which self-fertilization is prevented by pollination, such as failure of pollen to germinate, inability of the pollen tube to penetrate the style, or slow or halted growth of the pollen tube, even though both male and female gametes with normal functions are formed simultaneously in monoecious flowers. This phenomenon is widely found in higher plants, and is clearly considered to be one of the reproductive modes that maintain and promote allogamy. There are two types of incompatibility: homotypic incompatibility, in which no morphological differentiation is observed in the pistil or stamen, and heterotypic incompatibility, in which differentiation is observed in the length of the pistil and stamen, the surface shape of the stigma, and the size and shape of the pollen.
