Ujigawa Collection

...The compilation was started in 1232 (Joei 1) by the imperial decree of Emperor Go-Horikawa, but the manuscript was burned in grief over the death of the retired emperor, and during the second work, over 100 poems (probably by Emperor Go-Toba and others) were selected at the request of the regent Michika and his son Norizane, who were concerned about the relationship with the shogunate, and it was completed in 1235 (Kasei 1). Teika's kana preface shows his belief in what an imperial anthology should be, but in terms of content, in addition to Shin Kokin poets such as Shunzei, Yoshitsune, Ietaka, and Saigyo, there are many poems by pro-shogunate court nobles such as Fujiwara Michika, Saionji Kintsune, Minamoto no Sanetomo, and Hojo Yasutoki, which earned the anthology the nickname "Ujigawa Collection," and poems by people related to the Jokyu War were excluded. In terms of style, he broke away from the seductive beauty of the Shinkokinshu poems, and wrote many simple and elegant poems that did not highlight technical skill; he was highly valued by the Nijō family and formed the mainstream of the medieval poetry world.

…1232年(貞永1)に後堀河天皇の勅により編纂に着手したが，上皇の他界を悲しみ稿本を焼却したり，再度の作業過程中にも，対幕府関係をおもんばかる関白道家･教実父子の意向により100首余(おそらく後鳥羽院らの歌)を切り出すなどの経緯を経て，35年(嘉禎1)成立。定家執筆の仮名序には，勅撰集のあるべき姿への信条を読み取れるが，内容的には，俊成，良経，家隆，西行ら新古今歌人以外，親幕派の公家藤原道家，西園寺公経や源実朝，北条泰時ら武家の歌が多く，〈宇治川集〉の異名を得たり，承久の乱関係者の歌が除かれるなどの面があった。歌風の上では，新古今的妖艶美から脱化し，平明端麗で技巧を目立たせない歌が多く，二条家に重視されて，中世歌壇の主流を形成した。…
