A chemical substance present in living organisms, a type of purine base. It is also called 2,6-dihydroxypurine. It is found in the urine, blood, and liver of animals, and in plant seeds. When isolated, it appears as a colorless powder or fine needle-like crystals. Its molecular weight is 152.1. It is equivalent to deaminated guanine. In living organisms, it is a metabolic intermediate of purine nucleotides, which are metabolized to uric acid via xanthine by an enzyme called xanthine oxidase. The nucleoside of xanthine is called xanthosine, and the nucleotide is called xanthylic acid, which can be obtained by deaminating guanylic acid or by deaminating nucleic acid and then alkaline decomposition.
