A group of tombs unique in the Islamic world remaining in Samarkand, Republic of Uzbekistan. The name means "living king." From the gate newly built by Ulugh Beg in 1434-35 at the foot of the south side of the hill, a path about 70 meters long leads to the top of the hill, and on both sides of the path, large and small tombs were built from the late 14th century to the early 15th century. Most of them are anonymous, and their construction dates are unclear. The main remains are the remains on the top that are said to be the tomb of Qasim ibn Abbas (cousin of the Prophet Muhammad), the tomb of Timur's niece Shadi-Mulk Aqa, and the tomb and mosque of one of Timur's wives Tuman Aqa. Unlike the tombs of rulers, which are public in nature, these tombs are distinctive in that they have a strong private character. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
