…There are many different forms of contract farming, including bringing farm tools and livestock (in this case, remuneration is based on the contracted area) and simple day labor, but one well-known example is the “otrabotka” system, where the worker is contracted to do all the work from plowing to harvesting on an allotted plot of land on a landowner’s directly managed farm that is twice the size of the rented land, and the remuneration is used to pay the rent. This is similar to feudal corvée (labor rent), and it was seen as a typical example of the otrabotka system, and Lenin said that the “otrabotka system is a direct relic of the corvée economy,” but this view is one-sided. “otrabotka” is merely a form of offsetting high rents and low labor remuneration, which was based on the widespread prevalence of these two in rural areas during the establishment of Russian capitalist society after the emancipation of the serfs. …
