A Dutch East India Company employee at Ayutthaya. Born near Rotterdam, he joined the company in 1628 and travelled to Java, where he worked at the Hirado factory from 1629 to 1633 and at the Ayutthaya factory in Thailand (Siam) from 1634 to 1636. During this time he wrote "Records of the Kingdom of Siam." He returned to the Ayutthaya factory in 1638, during which time he wrote "Chronicles of the Kingdom of Ayutthaya" (the oldest surviving Thai chronicle) and "Records of Internal Rebellion in the Kingdom of Siam" (the fundamental source for Yamada Nagamasa). After returning to Batavia (now Jakarta) in 1641 and getting married, he was appointed chief of the Persian factory, but he was not assigned to his post and instead served as governor of Malacca from 1642 to 1646.

オランダ東インド会社のアユタヤ商館員。ロッテルダム近郊に生まれ，1628年東インド会社に入ってジャワ島に渡り，29‐33年に平戸商館，34‐36年にタイ(シャム)のアユタヤ商館に勤務した。この時《シャム王国記》を著した。38年から再びアユタヤ商館に勤務し，この間に《アユタヤ王国年代記》(現存するタイの年代記中最古のもの)，《シャム王国内乱記》(山田長政に関する根本史料)を執筆した。41年バタビア(現，ジャカルタ)に帰って結婚した後，ペルシアの商館長に任命されたが，結局任地には赴任せず，42‐46年マラッカ総督を務めた。
