1602‐63 A Dutch East India Company employee at Ayutthaya. Born near Rotterdam, he joined the company in 1628 and travelled to Java, where he worked at the Hirado factory from 1629 to 1633 and at the Ayutthaya factory in Thailand (Siam) from 1634 to 1636. During this time he wrote "Records of the Kingdom of Siam." He returned to the Ayutthaya factory in 1638, during which time he wrote "Chronicles of the Kingdom of Ayutthaya" (the oldest surviving Thai chronicle) and "Records of Internal Rebellion in the Kingdom of Siam" (the fundamental source for Yamada Nagamasa). After returning to Batavia (now Jakarta) in 1641 and getting married, he was appointed chief of the Persian factory, but he was not assigned to his post and instead served as governor of Malacca from 1642 to 1646.
