Nucleophilic elimination reaction

Nucleophilic elimination reaction
Also known as E reaction. When a strong base is applied to an alkyl halide, dehydrohalogenation occurs, resulting in the introduction of a double bond. It is thought that the nucleophilic reagent OH- acts on the hydrogen atom of the carbon atom adjacent to the carbon atom bonded to the halogen, resulting in the introduction of a double bond at the same time as the halogen atom is removed. This usually occurs when the reaction temperature is high. Steric hindrance is large, and in many cases the hydrogen atom attached to the carbon atom with fewer hydrogen atoms is removed.
