Ginkgoites (English spelling)
A fossil genus belonging to the gymnosperm family Ginkgoaceae. Fossil leaves with deeply incised fan-shaped leaf surfaces. They first appeared in the Mesozoic Era, flourished in the Jurassic Period, and were distributed worldwide in the Cretaceous Period, but became extinct in Europe and North America toward the end of the Neogene Period of the Cenozoic Era. The extant species of ginkgo, Ginkgo biloba , which has survived to the present day in Japan and China, is morphologically indistinguishable from those found in the Triassic Period.
