The part that acts as the legs of an aircraft when it is on the ground; also called landing gear. Most airplanes, which must taxi during takeoff and landing, use wheels, but helicopters and gliders often use sled-type landing gear, and skis are sometimes used on snow, while seaplanes use boat-shaped floats. Air-cushion landing gear is also being researched. The Wright brothers' first airplane took off and taxied on a cart that ran on wooden rails, and landed on a sled.
