(1) The name of the strike sound of the otsuzumi drum in Noh. A soft, weak, but resonant sound. In some schools, it is called "kan." It is chanted as "tsu" and written as "" or "・" on musical scores. (2) The name of a technique for striking the drum in Noh and Nagauta. A technique in which the drumstick is struck lightly and the leather is held down directly, striking an entire phrase. The right plectrum hits the beat and the left plectrum hits the half-way mark, making a total of 16 strikes. One of the basic techniques. (3) A term used in Kabuki directing.
