This refers to the cultural boom seen during the reign of Charlemagne of the Carolingian Frankish Kingdom from the end of the 8th century to the beginning of the 9th century. Charlemagne had a strong sense of mission in Christianizing the Western European empire he had revived and reviving its culture. Both his empire and the Carolingian dynasty were short-lived, but the Carolingian Renaissance he ignited eventually bore fruit and brought about the true dawn of Western culture, although it had its limitations as a "court culture." In the desolate intellectual environment at the beginning of Charlemagne's reign, the task of reviving the Latin and Christian classics was left to the learned clergy from monasteries who were barely able to preserve the classics.
