Scraping

Japanese:
Scraping

A cutting tool used to give the surface of a machine-finished workpiece an even more precise finish by hand. This process is called scraping. It allows for fine adjustments that are not possible with machining, and the numerous very shallow depressions unique to the scraped flat surface act as oil pools, making it useful for smoother sliding motion on surface plates, machines, and measuring instruments. Based on the shape of the blade, they are classified as flat scrapers and sasabakisage. The angle of the cutting edge is changed depending on the material of the workpiece. High-speed steel and cemented carbide are used as blade materials. They are generally used to process cast iron products, but sasabakisage is also used to finish bearings made of soft metals such as brass and white metal.
