Najīb 'Azūrī

Arab nationalist journalist. Of Maronite Christian origin in Lebanon. In 1904 he founded the Arab Patriotic Union in Paris and Cairo. In his publications The Awakening of the Arab Nation and The Independent Arab (1907-08) the following year, he advocated that Arabs should become independent from the oppression of the Ottoman Turks and build an Arab empire. He also called for Muslims and Christians to stop their conflict and to remember their common Arab heritage in their confrontation with the Ottoman Turks.

アラブの民族主義ジャーナリスト。レバノンのマロン派キリスト教徒の出身。1904年パリとカイロでアラブ愛国同盟を結成し,翌年出版した《アラブ民族の覚醒》および《独立アラブ》誌(1907‐08)の中で,アラブはオスマン・トルコの圧迫に対し自立し,アラブ帝国を建設すべきことを提唱した。またイスラム教徒とキリスト教徒は対立をやめて,オスマン・トルコとの対決の中で双方に共通のアラブの遺産を思い起こすよう訴えた。
