An aromatic hydrocarbon, also known as benzylbenzene. It is a colorless needle-shaped crystal with an orange odor, with a melting point of 25.2°C and a boiling point of 265°C. In 1884, C. Friedel and JM Crafts synthesized it from benzene and methylene chloride using aluminum chloride as a catalyst. The synthesis method currently used is the Friedel-Crafts reaction of benzyl chloride and benzene. It is insoluble in water, but soluble in many organic solvents. It becomes benzophenone when oxidized with chromium oxide (VI), and is dehydrogenated to fluorene when passed through a red-hot tube. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
