Diphenylmethane

An aromatic hydrocarbon, also known as benzylbenzene. It is a colorless needle-shaped crystal with an orange odor, with a melting point of 25.2°C and a boiling point of 265°C. In 1884, C. Friedel and JM Crafts synthesized it from benzene and methylene chloride using aluminum chloride as a catalyst. The synthesis method currently used is the Friedel-Crafts reaction of benzyl chloride and benzene. It is insoluble in water, but soluble in many organic solvents. It becomes benzophenone when oxidized with chromium oxide (VI), and is dehydrogenated to fluorene when passed through a red-hot tube.

芳香族炭化水素の一つで，別名ベンジルベンゼンbenzylbenzene。オレンジ臭のある無色の針状結晶で，融点25.2℃，沸点265℃。1884年にC.フリーデルとJ.M.クラフツにより，ベンゼンと塩化メチレンから塩化アルミニウムを触媒として合成された。現在用いられる合成法は，塩化ベンジルとベンゼンとのフリーデル=クラフツ反応による。水に不溶，多くの有機溶媒に可溶。酸化クロム(VI)で酸化すればベンゾフェノンとなり，赤熱管を通せば脱水素されフルオレンとなる。
