1711‐80 A French author of fairy tales. After ending her unhappy marriage to Beaumont, she traveled to England in 1745, where she worked as a teacher while also making a name for herself by publishing works, mainly children's literature. When she returned to England in 1762, she wrote works such as the heavily autobiographical Memoirs of Baroness de Batville (1776). She published as many as 70 books in her lifetime. When writing children's literature, Madame de Beaumont aimed for a "simple style of writing that matched the tenderness of a young soul." From today's perspective, her writing style seems awkward and didactic rather than natural, but her contribution to increasing the readership of children's literature in the 18th century must be acknowledged.
