A town in Higashiokitama County in southern Yamagata Prefecture. Takahata, the town's center, is on the eastern edge of the Yonezawa Basin. It developed as a castle town and is served by the Yamagata Shinkansen. Rice, fruit, and livestock farming are practiced. There are factories producing raw silk, sake, dairy products, and lumber.
