A town in Higashiokitama County in southern Yamagata Prefecture. Takahata, the town's center, is on the eastern edge of the Yonezawa Basin. It developed as a castle town and is served by the Yamagata Shinkansen. Rice, fruit, and livestock farming are practiced. There are factories producing raw silk, sake, dairy products, and lumber. 山形県南部，東置賜(ひがしおきたま)郡の町。中心の高畠は米沢盆地東端にあり，城下町として発達，山形新幹線が通じる。米作，果樹栽培，畜産を行う。生糸，清酒，乳製品，製材などの工場がある。東日本大震災で，町内において被害が発生。180.26km2。２万5025人（2010）。
