There are compounds of tin and sulfur in which tin is divalent and tetravalent.
[Tin(II) sulfide]
Chemical formula: SnS. When hydrogen sulfide is passed through an aqueous solution of tin(II) salt, it is obtained as a brown-black precipitate. Tin(II) sulfide, obtained by heating metallic tin and sulfur, is a gray crystal. It belongs to the orthorhombic crystal system and has a density of 5.08g/cm3. Its melting point is 880°C and its boiling point is 1230°C. At high temperatures, it tends to disproportionate into tin and tin(IV) sulfide. It has a rock salt structure and is practically insoluble in water (solubility is about 1.36× ¹⁰⁻⁶ g/ _100gH2O at 18°C).

　化学式SnS。スズ(II)塩の水溶液に硫化水素を通じると茶黒色の沈殿として得られる。金属スズと硫黄を加熱して得られる硫化スズ(II)は灰色の結晶。斜方晶系に属し，密度は5.08g/cm3。融点880℃，沸点1230℃。高温ではスズと硫化スズ(IV)とに不均化する傾向がある。岩塩型構造で，水にはほとんど溶けない(溶解度は18℃で1.36×10^－6g/100gH₂O程度)。
