There are compounds of tin and sulfur in which tin is divalent and tetravalent. [Tin(II) sulfide] Chemical formula: SnS. When hydrogen sulfide is passed through an aqueous solution of tin(II) salt, it is obtained as a brown-black precipitate. Tin(II) sulfide, obtained by heating metallic tin and sulfur, is a gray crystal. It belongs to the orthorhombic crystal system and has a density of 5.08g/cm3. Its melting point is 880°C and its boiling point is 1230°C. At high temperatures, it tends to disproportionate into tin and tin(IV) sulfide. It has a rock salt structure and is practically insoluble in water (solubility is about 1.36× 10−6 g/ 100gH2O at 18°C). Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
