Year of death: Bunkyu 2.5.1 (1862.5.29) Year of birth: Bunka 12.1? (1815) A sonno joi (revere the expulsion of the nobility) patriot in the late Edo period. His given name was Suiyu, and his pen names were Kyodo and Garyu. He was born to the doctor Komori Shozo of Izushi, Tajima Province (Hyogo Prefecture). In 1840, he went to Tokyo and served Nakayama Tadayoshi, and was adopted by Tanaka Omisuke, a Shodaifu (shōdaifu) of the same family. He educated Tadayoshi's children Tadaai, Tadamitsu, and Keiko, as well as Sachimiya (Emperor Meiji). He expanded his ties with sonno joi (revere the expulsion of the nobility) patriots from all over the country, and resigned from his post in Bunkyū 1 (1861) out of fear that this would bring trouble upon his master's family. Together with Shibayama Aijiro, Hirano Kuniomi, Ogawa Kazutoshi, and Kiyokawa Hachirō, they attempted to raise an army when Shimazu Hisamitsu came to Kyoto in 1862, but were suppressed in the Teradaya Incident. He was slain while being escorted by sea to Satsuma. He left behind the death poem, "Rather than watching the unchanging moon while I live, I would rather die and sweep away the floating clouds of the world."
