A former town in Senboku District, eastern Akita Prefecture. It occupies the Tamagawa River basin, with Lake Tazawa to the west and Mount Hachimantai and Mount Komagatake towering over the eastern border with Iwate Prefecture. It is rich in forestry resources, with many lumber and woodworking factories in Obonai, located in the center along the Akita Shinkansen (Tazawako Line) and National Route 46. It is home to Tamagawa Onsen and Nyuto Onsenkyo, and is a base for hiking and sightseeing in Towada-Hachimantai National Park. In September 2005, it merged with Kakunodate Town and Nishiki Village in Senboku District to become a city, Senboku City. Area: 672.06 km2 . Population: 12,714 (2003). 秋田県東部,仙北郡の旧町。玉川流域を占め,西部に田沢湖,東部の岩手県境に八幡平(はちまんたい),駒ヶ岳がそびえる。林産資源に富み,秋田新幹線(田沢湖線),国道46号線に沿う中心の生保内(おぼない)に製材・木工工場が多い。玉川温泉,乳頭温泉郷があり,十和田八幡平国立公園の登山・観光基地である。2005年9月,仙北郡角館町,西木村と合併し市制,仙北市となる。672.06km2。1万2714人(2003)。
