Clément Janequin

Clément Janequin

French composer. Born in Châtellerault. After working in Bordeaux and Angers, he moved to Paris in 1549, where he spent his later years as a member of the royal chapel and died there. He was the greatest composer of polyphonic chanson, which flourished in Paris and the royal court in the first half of the 16th century, and left behind about 250 chansons. Most of his works are four-part pieces with familiar melodies and written in a style that skillfully combines homophonic and polyphonic techniques. Many of the themes sung are about the joys and sorrows of love between men and women, and many of them contain explicit sexual depictions. He is also known for his masterpieces that depict bird songs and scenes of war. He also left behind many works in the field of religious music, but his Huguenot psalms, which he composed for the French translation of "Psalms" by the poet Marot, are particularly important.
