A medieval and early modern samurai family from Kazusa. A first-line branch of the Taira Miura clan. Taira Nakamitsu took the name Fukabori after his estate in Fukabori, Kazusa Province. Nakamitsu became a retainer of the Kamakura Shogunate, and was rewarded for his military achievements on the Shogunate's side during the Jokyu War. However, his son, Noriyuki, requested a change in the location of the reward, and finally in 1255 (Kencho 7), he became the land steward of Hachiura, Sonoki Manor, Hizen Province (present-day Fukabori-cho, Nagasaki City, Nagasaki Prefecture). He settled in the area around the time of the Mongol invasion, and thereafter subjugated the existing lords and developed his rule as a feudal lord. The eldest son system weakened from the end of the Kamakura period, and during the Nanboku-cho period, the eldest son and his illegitimate son played separate roles on the Ashikaga side.
