Ionians - Ionians (English spelling)

Ionians - Ionians (English spelling)
A tribe of ancient Greeks. They spoke an Ionian dialect and lived in Ionia in Asia Minor, on the islands in the central Aegean Sea, Euboea, and Attica. They are mentioned only once in Homeric poetry, but became especially important after the central part of the west coast of Asia Minor became known as Ionia. Although the ancient tradition that Athens was the mother city of all Ionians is false, there is some truth in the fact that the Athenians systematically expanded into Ionia. The Ionians founded the first colony (Apoikia) on the Black Sea coast around 750 BCE, ahead of the Dorian states on the mainland, and further colonies on the islands of Aenaria and Pithecus in the Bay of Naples, opening the way to the West. They were also the first to colonize Sicily. They developed rapidly both economically and culturally, and the term Ionians became the general term for Greeks in the Orient.
