Kirin Sho

Japanese: 《麒麟抄》 - きりんしょう
Kirin Sho

[Japanese shogi]
It is believed that Southeast Asian shogi was introduced to Japan in ancient times, but there is no physical evidence or record. The oldest document on shogi is the Kirinsho, written by Fujiwara no Yukinari in the early 11th century, which describes how to write the characters for the pieces. All that is known about shogi at that time is that (1) the characters for the pieces could be written in either regular or cursive script, (2) a piece could be promoted, and (3) a promoted piece was written in gold and cursive script. The word shogi also appears in Fujiwara no Akihira's Shin Sarugaku-ki (compiled in the mid-11th century).
