Poetry of history - yŏng shǐ shī

Japanese: 詠史詩 - えいしし（英語表記）yŏng shǐ shī

Chinese poetry that takes historical events as its subject. Ban Gu's "Poetry of History" from the Later Han Dynasty is the oldest of its kind, and is a moving ode to the story of the filial daughter Tiei during the reign of Emperor Wen of the Former Han Dynasty. The "Wen Xuan" (Wen Xuan), compiled in the early 6th century, includes a section on "Poetry of History" as a collection of poems, and includes 21 works, including "Poetry of History" by Wang Can and "San Liang Poetry" by Cao Zhi. Both Wang Can and Cao Zhi's poems tell the story of three loyal subjects who died for Duke Mu of Qin in the Spring and Autumn Annals. This type of poetry often borrows from history to satirize current events, and the eight poems in "Poetry of History" by Zuo Si from the Jin Dynasty at the end of the 3rd century are typical examples.

歴史故事に題材を求めた中国の詩。後漢の班固の《詠史詩》はその最も古いもので，前漢文帝の時代の孝女緹縈（ていえい）の物語を主題として感慨をうたう。6世紀初に編まれた《文選（もんぜん）》では，詩の一体として〈詠史〉の部を設け，王粲（おうさん）〈詠史詩〉，曹植（そうしよく）〈三良詩〉以下，21首の作品を収める。王粲，曹植の詩は，ともに春秋秦の穆公（ぼくこう）に殉死した3人の忠臣の話をうたっている。この種の詩は歴史に借りて時事を風刺することが多く，3世紀末晋の左思の〈詠史詩〉8首はその典型といえる。
