A father and son duo known for making automata in 18th century Switzerland. The father was Pierre Jacquet-Droz (1721-90) and the son was Henri-Louis Jacquet-Droz (1751-91). Around 1773, they created a copying doll, a painter doll, and a musical doll that amazed people. Each doll was about one meter tall and could move just like a human, writing letters or playing the organ. The dolls' movements were determined by complex mechanisms that included built-in springs, gears, cams, and springs. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
