In the narrow sense, it refers to a substance that is harmful to living organisms or has a life-threatening effect even in very small amounts, and is generally called a poison. However, in Japanese law, a poison is a substance designated by the Minister of Health, Labor and Welfare under the Poison and Deleterious Substances Control Law, and includes preparations containing yellow phosphorus, tetraalkyl lead, inorganic cyanide compounds (such as potassium cyanide), mercury compounds, arsenic compounds, curare, and nicotine. In the broad sense, it refers to all substances that have a harmful effect on living organisms. Many chemical substances have harmful effects depending on the amount taken into the body, so in this sense, medicines and table salt can also be said to be poisons depending on the amount.
