...MGM in particular had many talented people on its staff and produced works with a distinctive style such as the Broadway Melody series (1936, 1938, 1940). Judy Garland, who appeared in one of these films, The Broadway Melody of 1938, at the age of 15, went on to star in her first starring role in The Wizard of Oz (1939), for which she won a special Academy Award. She went on to reign as Hollywood's biggest musical star for the next 15 years. Starting with "Ziegfeld" (1936), which depicted the life of Florenz Ziegfeld, the great producer known as the king of revues, with show numbers featuring a variety of stars, biographical musical films were made in the 1940s in particular, featuring entertainers from the world of show business as the main characters, such as "Yankee Doodle Dandy" (1942), in which James Cagney played Broadway giant George M. Cohan, "The Jolson Story" (1947), in which Larry Parks played Al Jolson, and "Night and Day" (1946), in which Cary Grant played Cole Porter. This trend continued in the 1950s with biographical films such as "The Devil's Passion" (1955), in which Doris Day played Ruth Etting, and "The Glenn Miller Story" (1956), in which James Stewart played Glenn Miller. During wartime, musical films became a "necessity" that represented escapism, with stars such as Ginger Rogers, Rita Hayworth, Betty Hutton, Betty Grable, and Gloria Jean bringing dreams to the gloomy lives of ordinary people with their dancing and singing, and easing the homesickness of lonely soldiers. From this came the birth of new stars known as "pin-up girls," led by Betty Grable, who enthralled GIs with her "beautiful dancing legs."
