This basalt belongs to the calc-alkaline rock series and is relatively rich in calcium and poor in alkali. It does not have a unique region in chemical composition, but is included in the tholeiite or high-alkaline basalt regions. In particular, high-alumina basalt is often used synonymously with calc-alkaline basalt. In Japan, calc-alkaline basalt is often referred to as a rock when augite and hypersine coexist in the groundmass [Geological Society Research Association: 1996].
