Manuscript painting - Shahonga

Japanese: 写本画 - しゃほんが

This refers to the decoration on the pages of a manuscript. It is also called illumination or miniature. This includes illustrations that correspond to the content of the main text of the manuscript, abstract patterns placed around the edges of the page, and elaborate initials at the beginning of a sentence. Since manuscript illustrations are viewed up close as a relatively small screen containing the text, they have different characteristics from large-scale paintings in terms of screen composition and color effects.

写本のページに施された装飾をいう。イルミネーションillumination，ミニアチュールminiatureともいう。これには写本の本文(テキスト)の内容に即した挿絵(イラストレーション)，画面の周囲などに配する抽象的文様，文章の冒頭に用いる凝った飾り頭文字(イニシャルinitial)などがある。写本画は，文字を含む比較的小さい画面をごく近接して鑑賞するところから，画面構成や色彩効果などに，大画面の絵画とは異なる特質をもつ。
