Dream Story - Yume Monogatari

This book was written on October 21, 1838 (Tenpo Boju 9) by Takano Choei, a scholar of Dutch studies in the late Edo period, in opposition to the shogunate's anti-Japanese measures against the arrival of the British ship Morrison in Japan, much like Watanabe Kazan's Shinkiron. The correct title of the book is Bojutsu Yume Monogatari. As the winter night deepens, Choei is alone while reading a book, and enters a world of ecstasy that is neither a dream nor a vision. There, dozens of scholars have gathered at someone's house to discuss current affairs. Soon, Person A and Person B begin to debate the Morrison. The contents of B's ​​answers to A's questions are information on the state of Britain, as represented by the Morrison (although the name of the ship is mistaken for a person's name), and in particular the issue of expanding trade into Asia and China. He describes the current situation in which Japan, which is under isolation, is being pressured to open up under the pretext of repatriating castaways, and opposes the expulsion order that seeks to repel this pressure. This book was transcribed soon after it was written, and it seems to have caused quite a stir, leading to the publication of "Yume Monogatari Hyō" and "Yume Monogatari". When the Bansha no Goku incident, a case of suppression of Dutch scholars, occurred in 1904, Choei was sentenced to life imprisonment for criticizing the shogunate government in this book.

江戸後期の蘭学(らんがく)者高野長英(ちょうえい)が1838年（天保戊戌9）10月21日に、渡辺崋山(かざん)の『慎機論(しんきろん)』と同様、イギリス船モリソン号来日に対する幕府の撃攘(げきじょう)策に反対して執筆した警世の書である。正しくは『戊戌(ぼじゅつ)夢物語』という。構成は、冬の夜ふけゆくままに、長英がひとり書を読む間に、夢となく幻となく恍惚(こうこつ)の世界に入る。そこは、ある人の家に数十人の学者が集まり、時事問題を論じている場である。やがて甲と乙とがモリソン号について問答をし始める。甲の問いに乙が答える内容は、モリソン号に代表される（ただし船名を人名と誤っている）イギリスの国勢の情報で、とくにアジア、中国への交易進出問題である。鎖国下にある日本に対して漂流民送還を口実に開国を迫っている現状を述べ、これを撃退せんとする打払令に反対した。この書は執筆後まもなく転写され、かなりの反響をよんだらしく、『夢物語評』『夢々物語』等が出た。39年蘭学者の弾圧事件である蛮社の獄が起こると、長英は本書による幕政批判の罪で永牢(えいろう)の判決を受けた。
