A medicine used within the scope of the insurance system based on the Health Insurance Act. Usually, when taking medicine, one purchases it from a drug store or pharmacy, or takes it after being examined by a doctor at a medical institution and then prescribed it. Insured drugs usually refer to the latter. In Japan, the universal health insurance system was established in April 1961, and all citizens were required to join either employee insurance or national health insurance. The nature of insured drugs is stipulated in the Health Insurance Act, and the type and price are determined by the Minister of Health, Labour and Welfare.
