A full-length novel by Mori Ogai. It was serialized in Subaru from the September 1911 (Meiji 44) issue to the May 1913 (Taisho 2) issue. It was published by Momiyama Shoten in May 1915. It is a story set in the Ueno area of Tokyo in 1880 (Meiji 13). Otama, a beautiful woman who is the concubine of the loan shark Suezo, falls in love with Okada, a medical student who happens to save her pet bird from a snake. One day she secretly waits for him, but Okada is out with a friend that day, and she is unable to speak to him, and so her relationship with him ends. The wild geese of Shinobazu Pond, which were accidentally hit and killed by a stone thrown by Okada, become a symbol of Otama's misfortune. Of Ogai's novels, this is the one with the most novelistic structure and is a masterpiece filled with pathos.
