Born: October 22, 1870 in Voronezh
[Died] November 8, 1953, Paris Russian poet and novelist. The first Russian to win the Nobel Prize in Literature (1933). Published his first collection of poems in 1891. Many of his early works, such as Derevnya (10) (The Village) and Suknodol (11) (The Dry Valley), depicted the backwardness of rural life, but he gradually moved away from socially-conscious works. In 1820, he fled to France due to his dislike of the Soviet regime. His main works include Gospodin iz San-Frantsisko (16), Mitina lyubov' (25), and Osvobozhdenie Tolstogo (37).
