A Carthaginian general. The son-in-law of Hamilcar Barcas. The husband of Hannibal's sister. In 237 BC, he marched with Hamilcar to Spain. Later, he suppressed a Numidian revolt in North Africa and planned to bring Carthage to the area. After Hamilcar's death in 229 BC, he took over command of Spain, strengthened his rule by using diplomatic tactics such as marrying an Iberian nobleman, and established the power of the Barcas family in the area by building the city of Carthago Nova. He planned to build a new Hellenistic kingdom here, constructed a royal castle, and minted Greek-style coins. However, his management of Spain created tensions with Rome, and as a result of negotiations, an agreement was reached to make the area south of the Ebro River in northeastern Spain Hasdrubal's sphere of influence.
