Resonance Energy - Kyomei Energy

Japanese:
Resonance Energy - Kyomei Energy

The energy that is stabilised by resonance between extreme structures of molecules with conjugated double bonds. For example, if one of the extreme structures of benzene, the Kekulé structure, is calculated as the sum of the bond energies of CC, C=C and CH, and compared with the energy obtained by an experiment on the actual benzene molecule, the benzene molecule is 155 kJ mol -1 more stable. This stabilisation energy is considered to be due to resonance between the two Kekulé structures, and is called the resonance energy. According to the valence bond (VB) method, if the minimum energy calculated using the wave functions Ψ a and Ψ b representing the total π-electron state of the Kekulé structure and the wave function for the Duar structure is taken as E 0 , then the difference between this and the energy E of Ψ a or Ψ b is

R = E - E0
is the resonance energy. This quantity indicates the stability of a molecule and is related to aromaticity. The resonance energy is also the stabilization energy based on the delocalization of π electrons, and from this standpoint it can also be calculated using the molecular orbital (MO) method.
