A former town in Koka County, located in the southeastern part of Shiga Prefecture, in the upper reaches of the Yasu River. The main settlement is at the northern foot of the Suzuka Pass, and developed as a post town on the Tokaido. There is the Yasu River Dam, and the towns are engaged in agriculture and forestry, and tea cultivation is thriving. In October 2004, it merged with the towns of Minakuchi, Koka, Konan, and Shigaraki in Koka County to form Koka City. 127.15 km2 . 9,265 people (2003). 滋賀県南東部,野洲(やす)川上流域を占める甲賀(こうか)郡の旧町。主集落は鈴鹿(すずか)峠の北麓にあり,東海道の宿場町として発達。野洲川ダムがあり,農林業を営み,茶の栽培が盛ん。2004年10月甲賀郡水口町,甲賀町,甲南町,信楽町と合併し,甲賀市となる。127.15km2。9265人(2003)。
