A city in the eastern part of Zhejiang Province, China, occupying the center of the plain on the south shore of Hangzhou Bay. Population 820,000 (1994). A prefecture was established in the Qin dynasty, and has changed little since the Han dynasty, except for a short period. It originally belonged to Kuaiji County, and during the Tang and Five Dynasties it belonged to Yuezhou (Shaoxing), and from the Song dynasty onwards it belonged to Shaoxing Prefecture, but now it is part of the Ningbo region. It is said that the place name comes from the fact that the Shun clan, whose surname was Yao, was given the title here. It lies halfway along the Zhejiang East Canal, which connects Ningbo in the east with Shaoxing and Hangzhou in the west, and with fertile plains in front of it, it was one of the major regional centers in eastern Zhejiang.
