Year of death: May 30, 1930 Year of birth: January 1, 1858 (February 14, 1858) A doctor and social activist of the Meiji and Taisho eras. He was the second son of Yoshimatsu Motokan and Kikuno, doctors from Buzen Province (Fukuoka and Oita prefectures). He later took the surname Kaji. He studied at Kiyo Medical School, the Foreign Language School, and other institutions. In 1883, he was adopted by Kato Sada. He learned about socialism while studying in Germany from 1898 to 1900. After returning to Japan, he established Kato Hospital. He was interested in social issues and formed friendships with Yano Ryukei and Kotoku Shusui. In 1903, he assisted in the launch of the weekly Heimin Shimbun. He also organized his own Chokodan (direct support group), and in 1904, launched the journal Chokogen. In 1909, he opened a fee-paying clinic within Kato Hospital. In 1914, he launched Seikatsu no Chikara (Power of Life) (later known as Heimin). In 1915, he reorganized Kato Hospital to open Heimin Hospital, where he practiced social work.
