A long-legged crab of the family Araneidae (Crustacea). Its carapace is about 2 cm long and triangular, and is not very hard. It is generally reddish yellow, but the first two pairs of walking legs are edged with yellow setae. Its phalanges are sickle-shaped, but the last two pairs of legs form incomplete claws with their pronodes and phalanges. It is distributed from Tokyo Bay to Kyushu, living on rocky seabeds at depths of 30 to 50 m, but its population is small. The name "kumogani" is more often used to mean "spider crab." In this case, it also includes the important edible snow crab, the world's largest spider crab, and the four-legged crab and the isokuzu crab, which are common on rocky shores.
