Language written in kana or a mixture of kana and kanji, used to explain Buddhist teachings primarily to the general public. Since the introduction of Buddhism to Japan, many scriptures written in Chinese have been used for study and ceremonies, but in the process of accepting Buddhism, an imported ideology, there was a demand to translate it into the language of the general public, particularly so that it could be directly understood by the general public. First, Sanskrit words were written in kana, then conjunctions and particles were written in kana, and Buddhist thought began to be written in pure Japanese. In the past, Buddhist books written in Japanese were only given a subordinate status, but in recent years they have attracted attention as a sign of the popularization of Buddhism and as a sign of an ethical view suited to the lives of the Japanese people.
