〘Noun〙 A carpenter's ruler (kanejaku) instituted by Shogun Yoshimune during the Kyoho era ( 1716-36 ). Measures had been inconsistent since the Middle Ages, but they were unified with a standardized standard of 303.65 mm, modeled after the ancient ruler at Kumano Shrine in Kii Province (Wakayama Prefecture). Later, surveyor Ino Tadataka combined this with the matashiro ruler (302.37 mm) used by carpenters to create the so-called compromise ruler (302.97 mm). This compromise ruler was approved by the Meiji government's Dajokan (Grand Council of State) and adopted as the official carpenter's ruler.
